🎓 How to Apply for a UK Student Visa from Ghana
Are you a Ghanaian student dreaming of studying in the United Kingdom? With world-class universities, diverse cultures, and endless academic opportunities, the UK remains a top destination for higher education. But before you pack your bags, you need to secure a UK student visa — officially known as the Student Route (formerly Tier 4) visa.
This detailed guide will walk you through the entire UK student visa application process, from eligibility and documents to visa interview tips and common mistakes to avoid.
📌 Step 1: Check Your Eligibility
To apply for a UK Student Visa from Ghana, you must:
- ✅ Have an offer letter from a UK institution licensed to sponsor international students (Confirmation of Acceptance for Studies - CAS)
- ✅ Prove you have enough money to cover tuition and living expenses
- ✅ Speak, read, write, and understand English (English proficiency test results may be required)
The CAS number is issued by your UK school once you've met their admission requirements and accepted the offer.
📁 Step 2: Prepare Required Documents
Gather the following documents before applying:
- 📄 Valid passport
- 📄 Confirmation of Acceptance for Studies (CAS) from your UK university
- 📄 Recent passport-sized photos (UK visa format)
- 📄 Proof of funds (bank statements or sponsorship letter)
- 📄 Tuberculosis (TB) test certificate – required for Ghanaians
- 📄 Academic certificates and transcripts
- 📄 Proof of English language proficiency (e.g., IELTS, WAEC English may be accepted)
- 📄 Parental consent letter (if under 18 years)
Tip: Make sure your documents are in English or accompanied by certified translations.
💻 Step 3: Complete the Online Visa Application
Visit the official UK visa website to begin your application:
➡️ Apply Here: gov.uk/student-visa
You’ll need to:
- ✅ Fill out the online application form
- ✅ Pay the visa fee (approx. £490 as of 2025)
- ✅ Pay the Immigration Health Surcharge (IHS) – approx. £776/year
Once submitted, you will receive an email confirmation and instructions to book your biometrics appointment.
📸 Step 4: Book Your Biometrics & TB Test
Book your biometrics appointment at the UK Visa Application Centre in Accra. You will need to bring your printed application, passport, and documents.
For TB testing, visit an approved clinic in Ghana. A certificate is required for your visa application.
📅 Step 5: Attend Your Visa Appointment
At the visa application centre (VAC), you will:
- 📌 Submit your biometric data (fingerprints and photo)
- 📌 Submit your supporting documents
- 📌 Choose whether to pick up your passport or have it delivered
VAC Location in Ghana:
UK Visa Application Centre
Movenpick Ambassador Hotel, Emporium Building
Independence Avenue, Ridge, Accra
⏳ Step 6: Wait for a Decision
UK visa processing usually takes 15 working days. You may opt for priority service (within 5 working days) at an extra cost.
You’ll be notified via email or SMS once your decision is ready. Collect your passport or wait for delivery. If approved, your visa vignette will be stamped inside.
✅ After Approval: Collect Your BRP in the UK
If your visa is approved, it will only be valid for 30 days to allow you to enter the UK. Once you arrive, you must collect your Biometric Residence Permit (BRP) within 10 days from a designated post office.
🚫 Common Reasons for Visa Refusals
- ❌ Incomplete or false documents
- ❌ Insufficient funds or unclear financial proof
- ❌ Weak academic history or poor Statement of Purpose (SOP)
- ❌ Inability to explain why you chose the course/university
Tip: Always be honest, consistent, and confident during your application or interview.
